Memories

A New Environment

When Mama traveled
We had a change
A change of environment
We were sent away
As Daddy was not well

When Mama traveled
We stayed with Auntie Rose
Far away in Kumasi
Life was so different
Life there was strange

When Mama traveled
They treated us like visitors
They spoke English to us
We missed home so badly
There was nothing much to do

When Mama traveled
Nothing pleased us
Nothing was familiar
We had to stay away for
three good months

Until Mama came back!

  1. I’m confident in saying it’s clear you missed your mom when she was gone-there’s something so special to a bond between a mother and her children. I appreciate that. Your slice had me reflecting on times I missed my own mom. Thanks for reminding me of her.

  2. I love how you crafted your poem about your feelings when separated from you Mama. Truly no one can take the place of one's mother and no place can take the place of home--no matter how good it is, no matter the love they give us.

  3. I love the structure of your poem. I could feel how badly you missed your mom when she was away. It also left me with several questions (Why did your mom have to leave for so long? What illness did your father face? Where did you live?). Maybe those can be answered in a later poem.
